Discover Béziers at your campsite La plage de l’Orb
Start by strolling along the famous Canal du Midi, aUnesco World Heritage site (since 1996), an artificial waterway designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet, 240 km long and 10 to 20 meters wide.
It links the Garonne to the Mediterranean. In October 1666, Louis XIV signed the decree authorizing its construction. It was completed in 1681, and finally christened with its present name in 1789 during the French Revolution.
It can be explored by mountain bike, or by pleasure boat at your convenience, but you can’t pass it by without stopping.

Next, admire the 9 Écluses de Fonseranes, a 17th-century engineering masterpiece also listed by Unesco in 1996, which is in fact a single lock with 8 basins and 9 gates. The locks are 312 meters long, and are an essential part of the Canal’s continuity.
Then, don’t miss the majestic Saint-Nazaire cathedral, in Gothic style with Romanesque architecture. Perched atop the town, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the town and surrounding villages, especially from its bell tower. Don’t forget to round off your visit with a visit to the Bishops’ Garden.
As you continue your visit, you’ll pass over the Pont-Vieux, a pedestrian-only bridge that allows you to discover different viewpoints of the city of Béziers.
The famous Allées Paul-Riquet (a lively shopping area) and the Franciscan theater, the Arènes, the church of St Jacques, the Chapelle des Pénitents, the Basilique St Aphrodite and, less well known, the Roman amphitheater and its remains are also among the places not to be missed.
Finally, for a moment of peace and quiet, take a break at Plateau des Poètes, an English-style garden in the heart of the city.
