Canal du Midi, péniche amarrée (France)

Walk on the Canal du Midi

Over 350 years old and 240 km long, the Canal du Midi stretches from Toulouse to Sète. It has been aUNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. The canal was created by the great Biterrois builder Pierre Paul Riquet, with the help of no fewer than 12,000 workers. Thanks to its beauty and majesty, it has become a local identity for the region. It has always been used for economic development (agriculture, viticulture, freight, etc.). The river crosses a number of communes, where you can sail, cycle and walk. Numerous hiking and mountain-biking trails have been set up for the enjoyment of enthusiasts.

The 9 Fontserannes locks are also classified as a historic monument, a major Occitan site and, like the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are a must-see on your visit to Béziers and its Canal du Midi.

Discover Saint Chinian

Come and visit Saint Chinian, a village founded in 825 with a monastery, located in the hinterland near the Cévennes. Today, the monastery is relatively well preserved.

The abbey was not as fortunate as the monastery, and was dissolved during the French Revolution. The former church is now the village hall. The remains of the former abbey church can be seen behind the hall (formerly the Cloister).

Today, the village is well known for its wine production (mainly red and rosé).

Discover the opportunity to visit, taste and buy local wines with, for example, Domaine Les Eminades (Luc and Patricia Bettoni).

Enjoy the weekly market on Thursday and Sunday mornings in the main square, in the friendly atmosphere so typical of the village of St Chinian.
